Living in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains

Between the Arve valley and the Mont Blanc massif, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains climbs through nearly two thousand metres of height difference. Le Fayet holds the valley floor at 580 metres, the village itself stands at 850 metres, and the traditional houses then scatter into hamlets up to around 1,400 metres, at Bionnay, la Villette, le Gerdil and la Gruvaz.

A spa town

The thermal baths have been treating patients at Le Fayet since 1806 and still run prescribed cures for skin and respiratory conditions. The commune has 5,730 residents recorded by INSEE, spread between the valley floor, the village and the high hamlets, a balance few mountain communes keep, and one that owes as much to the spa as to the skiing.

Activities through the year

In winter, Saint-Gervais opens onto two separate ski areas. Évasion Mont-Blanc, shared with Megève, Combloux, La Giettaz and Les Contamines-Montjoie, runs to more than 400 kilometres of pistes between 850 and 2,353 metres. The second, Saint-Gervais and Les Houches, adds 55 kilometres and is reached by the tramway.

The rest of the year, 28 kilometres of cross-country trails cover the Croix and Prarion plateaus, and the Bains du Mont-Blanc carry the thermal tradition over into wellbeing. The market is held on Thursday mornings, on the promenade du Mont-Blanc.

Heritage and culture

The Tramway du Mont-Blanc, France’s highest railway, leaves from Le Fayet and climbs to the Nid d’Aigle, at 2,412 metres since the extension opened in June 2026. Its operation passed to the county authority the same year. The municipal library on avenue du Mont d’Arbois and the swimming pool on avenue de Miage stay open all year.

Settling in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains means living in one of the few mountain communes served by rail, at 850 metres, with two ski areas starting on the doorstep.

Getting there and getting around

The Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet station is the terminus of three lines. The one from La Roche-sur-Foron and Annecy, the narrow-gauge line climbing to Vallorcine and the Swiss border, and the Tramway du Mont-Blanc. Few mountain communes have a direct rail link, which makes daily life here possible without a car.

By road, you take the A40 and leave at junction 21. Geneva international airport is 80 kilometres away. The railway does not climb as far as Les Contamines-Montjoie or the Assy plateau, but a coach station at Le Fayet covers those routes.

Free Facilibus shuttles serve the village and the car parks in high season, and run to the lift departures.

Schools

Saint-Gervais has four state primary schools, Marie Paradis, Le Fayet, Mont-Joly and Bionnay, along with the private Assomption primary and middle school. State middle-school pupils go to Le Verney in Sallanches. There is no sixth-form college in the commune, but the Lycée du Mont-Blanc stands at Passy, within the same area, and offers boarding.

Health and services

The nearest accident and emergency department and maternity unit are at Sallanches, where the Mont-Blanc hospital is open around the clock and runs a level 2a maternity unit. The municipal pool on avenue de Miage has a twenty-five metre lane pool, an outdoor pool, a sauna and a steam room. An ice rink completes the sports facilities.

Choosing to live in Saint-Gervais also means choosing an area, since the destination covers three communes with sharply different characters. The commune brings together the thermal baths, the railway station and the tramway terminus, with housing that runs from the valley floor up to the high hamlets. Les Contamines-Montjoie

The village sits at 1,164 metres at the head of the Montjoie valley, on a commune of 81 km² bounded by the Dômes de Miage and the Aiguille de Bionnassay. Passy

With 11,488 residents, Passy is the largest of the three communes in the area and rises from 542 metres at the lake to 2,804 metres. The Assy plateau keeps its heritage of modernist sanatoriums and the church of Notre-Dame de Toute-Grâce, decorated by Matisse, Léger and Braque.
