The origins of the Grand Massif

The history of the resorts that make up "the Grand Massif" is linked to the arrival of winter sports in France. In 1939, the “Les Carroz” site was equipped with the first ski lift. As for "Flaine", his discovery took place during a snowshoe walk. In 1977, the site was linked with “Samoëns”. “Morillon” and “Les Carroz” joined forces the following year. But, "Le grand Massif" was truly created during the winter of 1982 - 1983 thanks to the development of connections between the resorts. From now on, the great massif is made up of 5 large stations:  

  • the Carroz d’Arâches; 
  • Flaine;  
  • Morillon; 
  • Samoëns;  
  • Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval.

In total, the Grand Massif has an exceptional ski area of 265 km spread over more than 40,000 hectares. It has 148 trails for all levels. 80% of them are exposed to the North. The snow is therefore particularly abundant there.
